Gambling revenues in Nova Scotia have fallen slightly due to a rise in operating expenses and a $10-million drop in wagers, says an annual report released Tuesday.
The report from the province’s Alcohol and Gaming Division says total wagers fell to $1.42 billion in 2010-2011 from the $1.43 billion gambled the year before.
Operating expenses went up to $78 million from $70 million.
The Nova Scotia Gaming Corp. generated $141.6 million for the province’s coffers, about $11 million more than the NDP government budgeted. But that’s down from $145.9 million the previous year.
"Despite the slight decline, the year went well," Stephen MacDonald, the corporation’s acting president, said in a statement.
"Our network of retailers makes significant economic contributions across the province.
"As part of their lottery business, each of these 1,400 businesses also agrees to complete annual responsible gambling retailer training. It is one more step in ensuring we have a socially responsible gaming industry in Nova Scotia."
The Atlantic Lottery Corp. logged higher purchases of the national Lotto Max game, helping it to increase its revenues to $216 million, up eight per cent from the year before.
"It definitely out-performed expectations," said Nova Scotia Gaming Corp. spokeswoman Heather Hanson. "It had several jackpot rolls in 2011."
Wagers on video lottery terminals are down by almost $16 million to $672 million, but still accounted for just under half of all wagers in the province.
The NDP government took heat Tuesday as Liberal gambling critic Leo Glavine accused the province of not striking a responsible social and economic balance.
Not only did the province spend less on gambling prevention this year than last, it also spent more on communications and promotion than it did on research, treatment and prevention, Glavine said as he pointed out that the government spent $7.1 million on marketing and only $6.6 million on research, treatment and prevention.
"Spending $7.1 million to get people hooked on gambling is not a balance," said Glavine. "A real balance is required to ensure the government is not taking advantage of the addictions that plague so many in our province."
Last month, the provincial government said it would launch a study to examine the social harms caused by gambling, two years after it shelved a previous draft report on the issue.
The government disputed the first report’s findings — including a link between problem gambling and suicides — because it concluded the study’s methodology was faulty.
