Sports Betting Kiosk Ban Leaves Leave William Hill In A Pinch
The upcoming ban of sports betting kiosks in the US state of Nevada is putting a bit of a strain on some betting firms who operate in the Silver State.
For those not in the know, the Assembly of the State of Nevada passed a bill last week that will outlaw sports betting kiosks located throughout the state. The bill was originally introduced in the state’s Senate, which passed it through with an 18-3 vote. The Assembly passed through uncontested with a 41-0 vote.
The bill, which is unable to be vetoed, will go into effect July 1st if it is signed into law by state Governor Brian Sandoval.
The affected kiosks are offered by gaming firms and are placed throughout the state’s various bars and taverns, allowing punters in those establishments to have a convenient way in which to participate in legal sports betting. One of the establishments that feature these kiosks include Buffalo Wild Wings, which is one of the largest sports bar chains in the United States. Other clients include smaller bars and taverns located far away from the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas.
One of those gaming firms is William Hill US, the American subsidiary of the UK gaming giant. William Hill currently is one of the state’s major suppliers of the satellite kiosks, and although the legislation will likely put only a small dent in the firm’s coffers, it is still a tough pill to swallow.
“We are disappointed that the Nevada legislature has passed this bill. As technology continues to move forward, Nevada is now taking a major step backward,” a William Hill US statement read.
The gaming firm went on to state that the kiosks are in operation in full compliance of Nevada law, and that: “We invested considerable amounts of money and resources in reliance upon these regulations, only to see the rules change after the fact. We are evaluating our options, but most of all, we are sorry for the inconvenience this will cause our loyal customers.”
The sports betting kiosks are a growing, but still small segment in the Silver State’s overall betting picture. Last year the statewide take for the kiosks amounted to just about $600,000 or $7,142 per betting kiosk. Conversely, the whole gambling sector brought in $170 million in revenues last year within Nevada.
The bill was supported by the Nevada Resort Association, a lobbying group that consists of the state’s largest casino brands, who were undoubtedly fearing the competition that the kiosks were bringing its members. Nevada casinos have faced some rough times in the past five years, and it is understood that any competition would take away from the much sought after profits that land casinos thrive on.
Although the bill is veto proof, there is still a chance that the state’s Governor could intervene to help keep the kiosks. It is currently unknown whether or not the first term Republican Governor will take action. Sandoval has generally been pretty proactive when it comes to liberalizing the market, as he signed various online poker measures into law.
