Where would former South Floridian David ''Chino'' Rheem be, if it weren't for poker?

Jailed several years ago on assorted criminal charges, Rheem says poker helped save him, and now just a handful of players stand between him and winning the prestigious World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas.

''Poker has been such a key for me,'' he said in a recent phone interview. ``It got me away from a lot of trouble, steered me to the right path. Thanks to poker, I'm out of trouble and in a much better position. I'm not in a frenzy anymore.''

What a change for Rheem.

Eight years ago, he was convicted of felonies in Florida involving burglary and stolen property. He was sentenced to four months in jail and 30 months' probation.

The redemptive poker journey began with a chance meeting at a Bennigan's restaurant in Hollywood several years ago, and it has taken Rheem across the country -- and through countless poker rooms -- to where he sits today: at the final table of the World Series of Poker Main Event at the Rio in Las Vegas, with the chance to become a millionaire.
