If restricted online gambling exec is to use WTO as an argument the deadline is May 2

Over eight months ago, the then CEO of Betonsports, David Carruthers was arrested in the USA whilst connecting to Costa Rica on a flight from London.  Alleged by the US Department of Justice to have committed a number of offences related to his position as an executive at the betting group, Carruthers was detained, fired by his company and then allowed out on heavy bail on condition that he wears an electronic tracking device and remains on house arrest within the environs of St. Louis until his trial.

When that trial will take place is anyone's guess, and Carruthers and others charged in the case including Betonsports founder Stephen Gary Kaplan remain in a restricted legal limbo land.

But Carruthers, who has strenuously denied that he is guilty of any wrongdoing, and his legal team may have a card up their sleeves. Judge Mary Ann Medler of the United States District Court, Eastern District of Missouri, has ruled that the embattled former exec could use a March 30 ruling by the World Trade Organisation that the US is not compliant with the General Agreement on Trade Services as a basis for arguing for a dismissal of the case against him.

To do that, the argument would have to be based on the new WTO ruling, and Judge Medler has stipulated that the deadline for filing such a motion expires May 2.
